This perspective examines fiber-reinforced composite round link chains as a potential lightweight alternative for scraper conveyors. The excessive mass of conventional steel chains increases inertia, energy consumption, and dynamic loading, thereby limiting system performance. Composite materials offer significant lightweight potential and enable load path-oriented, material–structure integrated design. Key challenges include complex loading conditions, contact and wear, damage mechanisms, and manufacturing constraints. Future directions such as topology optimization, hybrid structures, and digital twin modeling are highlighted.
